Learning journey
1. Compare: look at two lichens and describe how their colours, shapes and edges are similar or different.
2. Classify: sort observations by visible growth form, such as crust-like, leafy lobes or tiny branches. Use descriptions rather than guessing a species name.
3. Investigate: compare lichens growing on different surfaces, such as bark and stone. Record the surface and whether the place is sunny, shaded or sheltered.
4. Record: take an overview photograph and a close photograph, if permitted. Note the date, location and substrate. Label what you observed separately from what you think it might mean.
5. Share: use a labelled drawing or short field note to explain one pattern you found and one question for further investigation.
Learning focus
Pupils practise observing, comparing, grouping and recording evidence. A lichen growing on bark or stone uses the surface for support; the lichen is a living organism, while the surface may not be alive.
Kew fieldwork
Stay with your group, follow staff instructions and use only accessible areas. Do not touch, scrape or remove lichens. If a feature is unclear, record it as uncertain and ask your teacher.
