Usually K−, C−, KC−, P−, UV−; a faint yellow K reaction is occasionally reported. No characteristic lichen substances are normally reported.

Found on nutrient-rich or nutrient-enriched bark and wood, and also on rocky or artificial surfaces.

Lecidella elaeochroma has a C+ orange reaction and simple spores; Catillaria nigroclavata has different spores. Many rock records assigned to A. punctata require comparison with A. lecideina.

Use the Amandinea key; check brown, one-septate spores and, where present, curved thread-like conidia.

For identification, use the relevant key and compare the microscopic characters and chemical reactions. Photographs alone may be insufficient for closely similar crustose species.
