A thin, sometimes barely visible, greyish-white crustose lichen. Its black fruiting bodies form short, narrow lines called lirellae. These are mostly unbranched, with raised margins surrounding a slit-like disc that may widen as it develops.

Other script lichens may be similar in appearance. Identification should include microscopic examination of the fruiting bodies and spores. Older literature may use the name Opegrapha herbarum.

For identification, use the relevant key and compare the microscopic characters and chemical reactions. Photographs alone may be insufficient for closely similar crustose species.
